Why Bigger Is Better
My grates are nearly 3 pounds heavier than OEM grates. They feature 5 reinforced bars that are 1-1/8" wide and 4 slots of 7/8", compared to the OEM which are just 1" bar and 1" slot. Additionally, the bars are consistently 1" thick along their full length instead of tapering down to the ends. The smaller slots help prevent large pieces of coal from falling through too quickly and acting as torches when the fan is on, which can burn up grates and reduce their lifespan.
To help your grates last longer, leave a small amount of ash on top of them and ensure that the ashes beneath the furnace do not build up near the bottom of the grates. This allows coals that fall through to finish burning closer to the grate instead of 6-8" away.
